The international seminar themed “Trend of Electronic Identity Development” organized by Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) and Smart City Consortium (SCC) was held on 23 September 2016 in Charles Kao Auditorium, Hong Kong Science Park. Hong Kong PKI Forum participated the seminar as one of the supporting organizations.
The seminar featured welcome and opening remarks, where CEO of HKSTP, Mr. Albert Wong, Convener of Steering Committee of Smart City Consortium, Mr. Eric Yeung, Chairperson of Board of Directors of Cyberport, Mr. George Lam as well as the Vice President of Lingnan University of Prof. Joshua Mok presented as the guests of honor, speakers from Hong Kong and Mainland China of the keynotes which addressed the electronic identity, blockchain and lastly the panel discussion to talk about the electronic identity and its applications.
“Over 40% of the world’s population is now connected through the Internet. In Hong Kong SAR, the Internet penetration rate has reached 75% of our population. This rate is among the highest in the world”, said CEO of HKSTP, Mr. Albert Wong in the welcome speech, “Hong Kong should continue Smart City construction without destroying the cyber security by adopting eID”.
China has an extensive issuing in eID cards and is increasing at a rapid speed. One of the speakers, Director of eIDLink, which is the Operator of the Third Research Institute of the Ministry of Public Security, PRC, Mr. HongJie Guo introduced the development trends of China National Electronic Identity and its application in multiple industries such as finance, logistics, online medicine, e-Commerce and telecommunication. According to the World Competitiveness Yearbook, Hong Kong has ranked first globally in technology infrastructure for five consecutive years. It is Hong Kong’s task to follow the trend of electronic identity development so as to establish a complete infrastructure to benefit all Hong Kong corporations and citizens under Smart City.
In the panel discussion session, the panelists mentioned that Hong Kong has already launched an app for Mainland Chinese to open up Hong Kong stock accounts from long distance, which is the pilot application adopting eID. As the representative of Certificate Authority Browser Forum, Mr. Atsushi Inaba said, eID provides a unified solution to web trust issue in the long run for easier e-business as well as online transaction without boundary, which makes government-recognized CA’s role even more significant in terms of building up a trusted internet world.
Hong Kong is known for its well-established infrastructure, if different industries could be united to leverage on infrastructure, web trust, government-recognized CA to carry on the electronic identity development, Hong Kong would undoubtedly be better improved as Smart City.
